Eufy is one of those more or less rare smart home companies that want to eke out its own ‘world’, Apple Home be damned. That’s how it has felt to us at HomeKit News since they seemingly abandoned making any of their recent smart home cameras compatible with your favourite smart home ecosystem. That seems to have now changed with the introduction of the first Eufy product to support Matter – in fact Matter over Thread – which of course in turn means it’ll work with Apple Home and a compatible Thread Border Router.
The new Eufy Smart Lock E30 is a smart deadbolt lock common to North American homes, and is a total replacement unit for your existing deadbolt lock. The external half comes complete with a standard keyhole and touchscreen keypad, but it also features a fingerprint sensor that the company’s website claims can react and unlock your door in less than a third of a second. As it’s a smart lock that will work with Matter ecosystems, you can also use voice control to lock or unlock your door, or your respective app – Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Samsung SmartThings.
The E30 uses eight standard AA batteries, with a typical life of eight months, depending on usage, but at 20% you’ll get an alert from the Eufy app allowing you to extend the life of the batteries by activating low-power mode.
The lock is BMHA certified, and is suitable for typical outdoor use, with an IP53 outdoor rating and the ability to function as low as -22ºF/-30ºC up to 158ºF/70ºC. All data is stored locally, although if you opt for any additional cloud options offered by the company, certain things like push notifications that include thumbnail previews, which will utilise the cloud. This mainly applies to their other locks that have built-in cameras, so in the case of this lock it appears that everything that matters for security – passcodes, prints etc are stored on the device itself.
The lock can store 50 fingerprints and 100 passcodes, although as you may have guessed by now, there’s no Apple HomeKey option available, which could limit its appeal to those more fully invested in Eufy’s own ecosystem. The Eufy Smart Lock E30 is available to purchase now from the company’s online store for US$169.99.
