LiFX Adds Permanent Outdoor Lights to its Matter Lineup

Smart lighting company LiFX continues its path towards Matter integration, with the introduction of new Permanent Outdoor lights. To be clear, these are different to the outdoor string lights released in Australia earlier this year. These new outdoor lights are designed to be fixed in position around the eaves of your home (or other suitable locations), and left permanently in place.

Unlike the company’s string lights, that are both tube shaped, and hang from a long ‘string’ power cable, these lights are more puck shaped, and adhere to a surface facing down. A cable connects all the lights together, covering up to 50ft/15.24m. The total length of the line of lights is split into two sections, with a combined 30 separate LED puck lights, although you can actually extend this to 200ft/61m, with a total of 120 LEDs.

Even though these lights are typically protected from the elements, due to their typical placement, they are in fact IP66 rated for outdoor use. Due to each light essentially being a separate entity, you’re able to set each of the lights to a separate colour, although this would only be an option via the LiFX app, not Apple Home.

The standard pack of 50 lights provides a total maximum output of 2,700 lumens, and in addition to 16 million colours available, the lights can also produce cool to warm whites. It doesn’t appear to offer Adaptive Lighting, although for outdoor lights that wouldn’t make any sense!

These lights use Matter over WiFi, so no Thread Border Router is required, only a Matter Controller, which for Apple will be any of their Home Hubs. US customers can purchase the new Outdoor Permanent Lights from Home Depot.
