New Matter-Enabled Smart outlet From Tapo

TP-Link’s Tapo brand has released a brand new Matter-enabled smart dual outlet for the North American market. The slightly misleadingly named ‘Smart Plug P210M’ is a Matter over WiFi dual outlet with energy monitoring (via the company’s own app), and offers 15A/1800W, whilst also being ETL certified.

As it’s Matter compatible, it’ll work with all Matter compliant platforms, including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung smartThings. Home Assistant isn’t mentioned, but it should work as long as you have Matter working on your HA setup. It’ll also work directly with the company’s own app of course.

As standard it uses Line, Earth/Ground and Live wires, and comes with Type B outlets found in North America, as well as Taiwan, Japan and a few other regions. The wall plate is standard in terms of dimensions, but unlike a lot of these standard outlets, this model has manual on/off buttons for each outlet. The sockets also come with a tamper resistant feature to make it difficult for toddlers to start inserting things into the holes.

There’s also an overcharge protection feature that monitors devices that are charging, turning power off to the relevant outlet when it detects that the device is fully charged.

As it’s a Matter over WiFi device, no hub is required other than a Matter Controller for each platform you wish to add it to, which in the case of Apple Home would be an Apple TV, HomePod, or HomePod mini.

Although the list price shows as US$29.99, which is still cheap, currently on Amazon.com, it’s on sale at 33% off, bringing the price down to under US$20.
