If you’re not in the US, you’re probably curious rightly about the headline! Not to worry, a company called ‘Big Ass Fans’ does in fact exist, and have now announced Matter support for many of their current ceiling fan lineup. This includes the i6, es6, Haiku, Haiku Coastal, Turbo6, Speakeasy, and Haiku range, along with all WiFi-enabled ceiling fan products going forward.
These are, as you can guess, Matter over WiFi, so there’s no Thread involved in their product range, but considering the company’s products were not even HomeKit compatible previously, the Matter update now adds official support. Prior to this, HomeBridge was the main solution for getting these into your Apple Home.
If you own any of the listed fans prior to the announcement, the company state that Select Haiku and Haiku L models will be Matter-compatible depending on when you purchased them. You can check compatibility of your Haiku and Haiku L fans by downloading the Big Ass Fans app, where it should show if there’s a Matter update available or not.
Whilst many of the residential range of fans are now available with Matter, their large industrial and commercial fans, evaporative coolers, heaters, and directional fans are not Matter compatible. With some of their fans also including lighting, the good news is that these will also be exposed to your Matter platform of choice, via Matter;
Control your fan and light using voice assistants.
Control your fan’s speed.
Control your light’s brightness and color temperature (if applicable).
Access your fan’s motion, temperature, or humidity sensor (if applicable).
Set up advanced scenes, routines, or automation using your preferred platform.
When it comes to the light, whilst you should be able to adjust the colour temperature, it seems Adaptive Lighting is not part of the deal, so to speak.
You can check out the range of fans by the company via their ‘big ass’ online store (pun intended).
