German Smart home company Eve is continuing its push toward remoulding all of its Bluetooth devices into Thread (and Matter) compatible ones. The company’s Eve Motion (sensor) has to be one of the last holdouts, with the original model having not even received a single update of any kind since its original release. The new model not only features Thread as the favoured connection protocol (although Bluetooth is still present as a backup), but has been totally redesigned, and even has an additional feature in the form of an ambient light sensor.
This takes it a step further than some other sensors like the forthcoming Thread-enabled Aqara Motion Sensor P1 which does contain a light sensor, but won’t have it exposed to HomeKit (as far as we’re aware at this time). The original Hue Motion Sensor – which the Eve certainly looks similar to – has both a light sensor and temperature sensor, but isn’t outdoor rated, which is left to Hue’s motion sensor.
Speaking of outdoor use, the new motion sensor is IPX3 rated (as was the original), which means it can withstand splashes of water and light rain. In terms of power, it uses 2 x AA batteries, which in some ways is a change to a coin battery, and comes with a smaller footprint than the original motion sensor at 65 x 65 x 34 mm / 2.56 x 2.56 x 1.34 in. Here are the basic specs;
Field of view: 120°
Distance: 9 m / 30 ft. max at 2 m / 6.5 ft. mounting height
Operating temperature: -18°C to +55°C (: 0°F – 130°F)
Indoors and outdoors: Certified IPX3
Twilight setting: 0 – 15,000 lux
The Eve Motion Sensor with Thread is currently available via Eve’s own online store for €39,95 or US$39.95.
